Assessing the Angular Density of Passive Microwave L-band Data

چکیده
With the launch of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission on 2 November 2009, there is a new opportunity for global near-surface soil moisture mapping from space [1-2]. Along with its innovative sensor design, a 2-dimensional array of L-band passive microwave radiometers distributed on a Y-shaped synthetic aperture antenna, a new generation of retrieval models were developed [3]. One aspect of the novel technology is the capability of multi-incidence angle brightness temperature measurements by SMOS. This is understood to facilitate the retrieval process by i) enabling the simultaneous retrieval of ancillary parameters and thus reducing the dependency on external sources, and ii) enhancing the retrieval accuracy [4]. This paper investigates the impact of the total number of available multi-incidence angle L-band data, following described as angular density, on the performance of the soil moisture retrieval model.

This paper presents a new design of a CPW-Fed multi bands planar antenna. This antenna can be integrated easily with passive and active elements. The proposed antenna is suitable to operate for GPS, PCS and WiMAX bands. Its entire area is 52.3x52.6mm2 and is employed on an FR-4 epoxy substrate and fed by a 50 Ohm coplanar line. The antenna parameters have been analyzed and optimized by using AD...

This paper explores the synergetics of passive and active microwave remote sensing to determine soil moisture under a corn canopy. An experiment has been performed at Alabama A&M Winfield A. Thomas Agricultural Research Station near Huntsville, Alabama in June, 1998. The fields were observed with a truck-mounted L-, Cand X-band polarimetric radar and a second truck-mounted Land S-band radiomete...
متن کاملAssessing of Fabric Appearance Changes Using Image Processing Techniques
This paper describes the use of image processing to measure lightness changes of fabric appearance. The lightness changes due to dyeing, washing and exposure to light treatments are studied. These properties are measured by using the changes in the intensity levels of the fabrics image and the L* obtained by a spectrophotometer. For each case, analysis of variance (ANOVA) is carded out and the...
متن کاملModelling and Validation of Combined Active and Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Agricultural Vegetation at L-Band
The distorted Born approximation (DBA) of volume scattering was previously combined with the numerical solution of Maxwell equations (NMM3D) for rough surfaces to calculate radar backscattering coefficients for the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission. The model results were validated with the Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiment 2012 (SMAPVEX12) data. In this paper we exte...
متن کاملPassive microwave soil moisture downscaling using evaporative fraction
This paper develops two different approaches for downscaling (disaggregation) passive microwave derived soil moisture from coarse resolution L-band observations. Ground and airborne data collected over Walnut Gulch experimental watershed during the Monsoon ’90 experiment were used to test these approaches. These data consisted of eight micrometeorological stations (METFLUX) and six flights of t...
